The character I chose to evaluate is Carmel Cato because I believe Smith captured his essence in her performance of him. On the set, he comes in next to a small memorial for his son. His hair is disheveled and his skin is pale. He wears a trench coat and looks at the memorial with remorse. Smith uses his accent and portrays the anger he has for losing his son, as well as the disbelief that came with it. The lighting honed in on Carmel’s distraught face as he spoke of his son’s death and the events that followed, including being told who to talk to and who he could not. He then said that he wasn’t afraid, and the camera zoomed in a little when he said, “You can repeat every word I say.” This makes it all the more real. The morbid music continues as the camera then goes to the candles. She is able to capture the reality behind Carmel’s words, embodying him as a character and making the audience see him through her.
